NASA Mars scientists say high resolution images taken by the Mars Global Surveyor (MSG) orbiter show layers of sedimentary rock, indicating that the Red Planet may have been covered with lakes and shallow seas. Such layered rock structures are common on Earth where there were once lakes. "The images tell us that the story is actually quite complicated and yet the implications are tremendous," says Dr Ken Edgett, staff scientist at Malin Space Science Systems, the principal investigator for the MSG's Mars Orbiter Camera. The 2001 Mars Odyssey will be launched in April.
