Rockwell has won a $38 million development contract to modify miniature receive terminals (MRTs) and secure communications systems which are used on US Air Force Boeing E-4B and US Navy E-6B airborne command aircraft. The MRTs will provide them with an enhanced high-data rate very-low-frequency (VLF) mode and a supportable VLF/LF receive system with anti-jam and on-platform operator control. The contract also includes options to make the MRTs suitable for use with the Minuteman Launch Control Centers. Up to 20 of the aircraft could be upgraded, with the E-4Bs being modified at the North American Aircraft Modification Center, Shreveport in Louisiana and the E-6B work being undertaken at Raytheon's Waco, Texas, site.
