India's science and technology department has proposed development of an unmanned high-altitude airship to monitor coastlines, international borders and areas under the grip of Maoist groups.

The airship, powered by solar panels with regenerative cells for night-time operation, could also be used for disaster management. Bangalore-based National Aerospace Laboratories will prepare a feasibility report on the project, which may be followed by construction of a 50kg (110lb) technology demonstrator.

The science and technology department estimates that 15-20 airships could monitor the entire Indian subcontinent.
