Sublimation of the dry ice ordered by airlines should become a thing of the past thanks to Cold Jet's new PR750 dry ice producer.
Being exhibited on stand 1B40 at World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo, the on-site system allows airline and catering users to manufacture dry ice and produce individually wrapped slices to a specific size.
"Dry ice is one of the biggest costs for airline catering companies, more than wine," says Cold Jet's general manager Dietmar Juchmes.
He says that dry ice sublimates (turns from a solid to a gaseous state) at a rate of 5-8% a day, which can be a problem when it is being delivered. Juchmes says that if an aircraft is grounded because of weather or strikes, then the dry ice that had been delivered for its service trolleys can disappear by turning back into gas.
"With the PR750, you just press a button two hours before an aircraft is due to fly," he says. In addition he says it helps reduce waste, improve the quality of dry ice used in-flight and can make big savings for airlines. He estimates that annual cost savings through waste reduction for users are 20% over having dry ice delivered.
Juchmes is also keen to point out the environmental credentials of the system with the carbon dioxide gas used to make the dry ice having been recycled.
