Intelligence data that pointed to the possible transfer of Israeli-developed technology from Turkey to Iran was behind the sudden cancellation of a $141 million contract to supply sensors to the Turkish air force according to sources.

As reported on 22 December, the Israeli ministry of defence blocked the 2009 deal won jointly by Elbit Systems's Elop division and by the Elta business of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) .

The pod, developed for the Turkish air force's Lockheed Martin F-16s, includes an SAR radar and an advanced large area scanning electro-optical sensor.

The almost complete severance of relations between Israel and Turkey contrasts with the relatively cordial atmosphere between Turkey and Iran.

Israeli sources said on 23 December that the decision was "inevitable" given the current diplomatic climate and the highly advanced technology involved.
