Israel air force Lockheed Martin F-16s intercepted a Lufthansa Airbus A340 near Israel's coast on 25 February after radio contact with the airliner was lost owing to the use of the wrong frequency aboard the aircraft. The A340, carrying 181 passengers, approached Israel from the north-west. The pilot failed to call Israeli air traffic control, which called the aircraft but received no reply. Two F-16s were sent to intercept the airliner, at which point radio contact with the aircraft was re-established. When the pilot discovered the error, he called Tel Aviv control and the fighters were called off.
