Istanbul Ataturk airport is closed to all flights until the early morning of 29 June, following blasts that hit the airport earlier today.
The airport says in a brief statement on its Twitter feed that it will be closed until 05:00 local time on 29 June, as stated in a NOTAM.
Media reports say as many as 28 people were killed in the airport blasts, believed to be the work of suicide bombers. Dozens more are believed to be injured.
The US Federal Aviation Administration confirms that all flights to Istanbul from the USA have been suspended.
Turkish Airlines is the only carrier currently flying between Istanbul and the USA, serving cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Washington DC, New York and Boston, according to FlightMaps Analytics.
Transport Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Air Canada has cancelled its evening departure to Istanbul, according to the carrier’s website.
