The Italian air force has begun retiring its Alenia Aeronautica (formerly Aeritalia) G222 tactical transports after 27 years of operations.
The service took delivery of 52 G222s from April 1978, including 40 tactical transports, and has so far amassed over 160,000 flying hours with the type, including peacekeeping activities in Bosnia, East Timor, Ethiopia, Kurdistan and Somalia.
The G222 will be replaced in the tactical transport role by Alenia’s C-27J Spartan from next year.
