A CERTIFICATED LIGHT aircraft produced in Italy has been introduced into the US market, aimed at flying schools.

The Tecnam P92-J will sell at prices starting from $80,000 and will be in head-on competition with aircraft such as the Canadian-produced Diamond Katana, says the Naples based company.

Over the last three years, Tecnam has built some 200 aircraft in Italy. The all-metal, high-wing, two-seater has a cruise speed of 100kt (185km/h) and is powered by a 60kW (80hp) Rotax 912A.

Other applications, says the company, include observation and reconnaissance and police work. Tecnam, which has set up a US distribution office in California, says that it plans to establish an assembly line in the USA.

The nose-wheel-equipped aircraft will be flown on a of tour the USA during 1996, being exhibited at shows in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and Dayton, Ohio.
