The Japan Defence Agency (JDA) is planning to launch initial development of a new integrated ramjet-powered supersonic air-to-surface missile (ASM) as a successor to the Mitsubishi Type 93 ASM-2.
Tentatively designated the ASM-3, the new missile will be powered by a combined-cycle rocket motor during launch and acceleration, and by an air-breathing ramjet for sustained supersonic cruise. The JDA claims the weapon will offer an extended range over the subsonic ASM-2's estimated 100km (60 miles). Japan is already cooperating with the US Department of Defense on ramjet development.
The JDA is looking at a range of guidance options for the new missile, including a combination of active radar guided, passive radar homing and imaging infrared for improved resistance to jamming and active countermeasures. The turbojet-powered air-launched ASM-2 is fitted with an NEC inertial navigation system and terminal imaging infrared seeker.
The Japan Air Self Defence Force may arm its new Mitsubishi/Lockheed Martin F-2A/B support fighter with the ASM-3, while the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force will need to replace its ASM-1 on the Kawasaki/Lockheed Martin P-3C maritime patrol aircraft.
