India's Jet Airways plans to start a daily service between Mumbai and Johannesburg from 14 April.

It will operate the service on Airbus A330-200 aircraft, says the carrier. Johannesburg is its first African destination, it adds.

"Given the strong linkages between India and South Africa, and the large number of people of Indian origin living in and / or working in South Africa, we believe that there is untapped potential and this new route promises to serve the needs of our discerning corporate and leisure flyers," says Jet Airways' CEO Nikos Kardassis.

The airline will compete against South African Airways, which operates four times a week on the route, says Innovata.
