The old Chinese saying says that a 1,000-mile journey begins with a single step, and China's Shenyang Liming Engine company took that step yesterday with the hope of becoming a long-term supplier of components to BMW Rolls-Royce.

Yan Tiannan, vice-president of China National Aero Technology International (CATIC), which oversees the country's aviation exports, signed a contract for Shenyang Liming Engine Manufacturing to produce compressor seal rings for BMW R-R.

The contract, signed on behalf of BMW R-R by Neil Ansell, director of operations, runs only until the end of the year and is for the modest sum of $60,000.

However, it may lead to much more substantial contracts if Shenyang Liming can demonstrate the necessary quality standards and ability to meet deadlines, says Ansell.
