MTU is to form a joint venture with Canadian Airlines International aimed at strengthening its position in the North American market. MTU Maintenance Canada began operations on 9 November and will include the activities of Canadian Airlines in maintaining General Electric CF6 and Pratt &Whitney JT8Ds. The CFM International CFM56 engine will also be included in the line-up "in the near future", says MTU. The DaimlerChrysler Aerospace affiliate is providing the finance "and comprehensive knowhow". Ownership is split 70:30% between MTU and Canadian Airlines International and the workforce is expected to grow to 230 by year end and rise to 450 by 2002.
