A US lawmaker is urging Federal Aviation Administration administrator Marion Blakey to address global warming as part of the next generation air traffic system (NextGen), saying the agency is failing to address this issue in its modernisation strategy.

Congressman Edward Markey, who chairs the House Energy Independence and Global Warming committee, in a letter to Blakey says: "Although NextGen includes an environmental working group an examination of its work to date suggests that it has yet to incorporate a serious examination of how global warming could significantly alter current assumptions about the growth path of the aviation industry".

Markey has also asked Blakey to clarify the FAA's position on the current and anticipated impact of aviation on global warming divulge how many tonnes of CO2 emissions are emitted on a yearly basis in the USA from aviation - both in-air and on the ground describe the strategies being considered to address emissions and present the status of the agency's studies on the viability of alternative aviation fuels.
