Lockheed Martin MS2 Tactical Systems says it is seeking export release approvals to conduct a demonstration of its Sky Spirit unmanned air vehicle as a littoral surveillance asset for a potential Indian Ocean rim customer.

Thomas Lewis, maritime surveillance enterprise director for the company, says an export licence application has been filed and "we are working the issues". If approved the demonstration would occur in the early part of 2008 on current schedules.

Speaking at this months DSEi exhibition in London he said the demonstration would incorporate littoral and overland surveillance phases.

Potential sensor payloads for the role include synthetic aperture radar, electro-optic and infra-red cameras, communications relay and a maritime automatic identification system (AIS) interrogator.

Lockheed has also been examining potential applications of the UAV as an unmanned adjunct to existing manned maritime surveillance aircraft says Lewis.
