THE MERGED Lockheed Martin has finally overtaken McDonnell Douglas (MDC) as the Pentagon's largest defence contractor, winning $10.5 billion-worth of US military contracts during fiscal year 1995. MDC lost its long-standing lead with only $8 billion.

Lockheed Martin took nearly 9% of the contract awards, which totalled $118 billion in 1995, down by $562 million from 1994. The group's lead is expected to grow again following its acquisition of Loral, which ranked eighth in 1995, with contracts worth $2 billion.

Other groups among the top ten contractors were Tenneco ($3.7 billion), General Motors ($3 billion), Northrop Grumman ($2.9 billion), Raytheon ($2.9 billion), General Electric ($2.1 billion), Boeing ($1.8 billion) and United Technologies ($1.8 billion).
