By all accounts, a piece of Space Shuttle Columbia departed the spacecraft while it was in orbit and this was observed on radar.

Much energy appears to have been focused on identifying the object by analysing signatures of various spacecraft pieces.

Surely the mystery object is still in space? Given the radar sightings, complete with timings and knowledge of Columbia's orbit, it must be possible to locate and view the item. Or am I missing something?
