Polish flag-carrier LOT will this winter axe transatlantic services from Krakow and consolidate them into its Warsaw operation.
LOT currently operates weekly flights from Krakow to New York JFK and a nine-weekly service linking Krakow with Chicago O'Hare. These flights will be discontinued in the winter schedule as part of its strategy of "creating a Warsaw hub".
However, a LOT spokeswoman says the carrier will continue to operate its twice-weekly service from Rzeszow in southwest Poland to New York JFK.
LOT's transatlantic operation from Warsaw includes nine flights a week to both Chicago and New York, and daily service to Toronto. All of the carrier's transatlantic services are operated with Boeing 767s.
"The effect of consolidating transatlantic flights in Warsaw is not only better utilisation of the carrier's fleet but also improved cost effectiveness and the consequent significant rise in the profitability of the entire flight network," says LOT in a statement.
Owing to planned runway renovation works at Warsaw in September, LOT will temporarily operate its flights to Chicago, New York and Toronto from Gdansk, Katowice and Rzeszow.
