Malaysia Airlines' (MAS) maintenance and engineering arm MAS Aerospace Engineering plans to establish a maintenance joint-venture with engine-maker Pratt & Whitney and it also plans to work with German aerospace maintenance company Krauss Aviation Technologies.
MAS Aerospace Engineering says it has signed a MoU with P&W to form a joint-venture at Kuala Lumpur's Subang Airport that will provide composite repair and overhaul of engine nacelles.
The new company will become part of P&W's Global Services Partners network and will work on P&W as well as engines from other manufacturers, says P&W.
The US company says the Malaysian joint-venture will complement P&W's existing nacelle repair shop in Michigan, USA.
P&W chose MAS Aerospace Engineering because the US company wanted to strengthen its position in Asia Pacific and MAS had a good fleet size, it says.
MAS will be the launch customer but the joint-venture will also work on other carrier's nacelles, it adds.
The Malaysian maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) firm also says it has signed a MoU with German company Krauss Aviation Technologies.
The Malaysian company will work with Krauss to repair parts for engines, landing gears and airframes, it says.
These two MoUs are part of MAS' and Malaysia's efforts to make Subang Airport a MRO hub accounting for 5% of the global MRO market by 2015, it adds.
