The Japanese government has awarded Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) a contract to study the potential of manufacturing regional jets in Japan. MHI will lead the expected five-year, ¥50 billion ($420 million) research and development project, with Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) participating as a subcontractor. Kawasaki Heavy Industries opted against seeking a role in the project, leaving only a joint bid from MHI and FHI (Flight International, 29 April-5 May).
