Midwest Airlines is to tap into the US leisure market by launching a low-fares operation using five of its Boeing MD-80s reconfigured with all economy seating.

The move is a departure in strategy for the struggling Milwaukee-based carrier, which has traditionally catered to business travellers by offering an all-business seat configuration. Midwest hopes the initiative will cut costs.

Dubbed Midwest Airlines Saver Service, the new launch in August will begin to replace Midwest's flights from Milwaukee to Denver, Orlando, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Los Angeles.

Midwest's customary all-business seat service will be marketed as Midwest Airlines Signature Service and continue to serve the bulk of the carrier's routes.
