Only Britain, France and Sweden were able to sign a long awaited memorandum of understanding at Le Bourget yesterday to allow the European Meteor air-to-air missile to go forward.

Britain's defence secretary Geoff Hoon played down the absence of Germany, Italy and Spain, saying they "would sign once they had completed their national staffing processes, which is expected to occur in the next few weeks".

Hoon says negotiations are continuing with Matra-BAe Dynamics for a contract to be signed before the end of the year. Only Britain, France and Sweden were able to sign a long awaited memorandum of understanding at Le Bourget yesterday to allow the European Meteor air-to-air missile to go forward.
