German engine specialist MTU is to consolidate most of its Vancouver maintenance operations – currently spread across three sites – at a newly acquired facility on the Canadian city's outskirts.
The future site, located at Boundary Bay airport, was previously home to a maintenance facility for helicopter airframes and engines, and will require "minimal changes" while providing "much-needed" space for 60% expansion, says MTU.
All repair operations at MTU's current facilities near Vancouver International airport will be gradually move to the new site, starting next year and running through June 2021.
An engine test cell at Vancouver International will continue to be used, however.
MTU Maintenance Canada chief executive Hemut Neuper states: "In 2018, we operated at full capacity, and we look forward to being able to more flexibly respond to market and customer needs in the future."
As the new location is in "a more affordable suburb" than the company's current Vancouver facilities, he expects the move to be beneficial for "new and younger employees we are hoping to attract".
More than 400 people are employed by the Vancouver operations today. MTU intends to recruit approximately 100 additional employees, it says.
MTU services CFM International CFM56s, GE Aviation CF6s and International Aero Engines V2500s in vancouver.
