In the world of avionics acronyms reign supreme, but you can never be quite sure what they mean.
There are FANS (Future Air Navigation Systems) that don't blow, VISTAs (Virtual Integrated Software Testbed for Avionics) with poor views and COTS (Commercial Off the Shelf) you can't sleep in - even MERMAID (Manic Extra-Radial Motor-Aided Intra-Digitation).
But the Flight Daily News prize for best original acronym at Asian Aerospace goes to the US and its Future Air Navigation and Traffic Avoidance Solution through Integrated Communication/Navigation/Identification.
