Avianca has resumed service between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, returning to the Honduran domestic market less than a year after abandoning it.
The Star Alliance carrier, which recently underwent a leadership overhaul, says it will resume the service to increase connectivity in Central America and boost its presence in Honduras.
It is operating daily on the route with ATR 72-600 aircraft. Avianca last offered service on the route in October 2018, but withdrew from the Honduran domestic market that month.
The airline recently appointed a new chief executive and chief financial officer, following a period of turbulence linked to the financial troubles of the airline's majority shareholder German Efromovich. Efromovich was ousted as Avianca's chairman in May and replaced with Roberto Kriete.
Avianca will compete on nonstop service between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula against Honduran domestic airline CM Airlines, which was the sole operator on the route following Avianca's temporary withdrawal.
Separately, Avianca has upgauged the aircraft type on its route between San Salvador and Tegucigalpa to Airbus A319s, from Embraer 190s. Avianca had previously said it was in talks to sell its 10-aircraft E190 fleet.
