Beijing Daxing International airport commenced operations on 25 September with China Southern Airlines operating the inaugural flight from the facility to Guangzhou.
China Eastern Airlines, Air China, China United Airlines, Capital Airlines and Hebei Airlines also operated services on the first day, following the official opening by Chinese president Xi Jinping.
Construction of the new airport began at the end of 2014, and now features a 700,000sqm passenger terminal, and parking space for 268 aircraft. It has four runways, which could eventually increase to six in total.
The Civil Aviation Adminstration of China (CAAC) says that 101 domestic and 15 international routes are set to launch from the airport during the northern winter scheduling period.
It is estimated by that 2022 passenger throughput at Daxing will reach 45 million passengers.
Daxing will play an important role in relieving congestion at Beijing Capital airport, and together they will have the capacity to serve over 250 million passengers in the future.
The opening of Daxing will lead to the closure of Beijing Nanyuan airport, with the sole operator there, China United, now moving its entire operation to the new facility.
International carriers Finnair, LOT, Royal Brunei and British Airways will operate flights to Daxing, while CAAC has adds that they will be joined by Ethiopian Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, and Royal Air Maroc.
To date, only British Airways, Royal Air Maroc and Royal Brunei Airlines have confirmed that they will operate solely to Daxing, with other carriers likely to split their operations between the two airports.
