LATAM Airlines Brazil will add Munich to its route map in the first half of 2019, continuing LATAM's streak of international expansion.
The Oneworld carrier says more details will be announced in the following months. Munich will become the LATAM group's second destination in Germany after Frankfurt, and will be its ninth city in Europe.
No airlines operate between Brazil and Munich, FlightGlobal schedules data show. LATAM's rival Avianca will begin service to Munich in November, launching the only nonstop link to the German city from South America.
LATAM began sales today for its new service to Lisbon from Sao Paulo, beginning 2 September. It will operate five times weekly on the route, with Boeing 767 aircraft. The airline will compete directly against TAP Portugal on the route, and indirectly against Azul, which operates nonstop to the Portuguese capital from Viracopos Campinas.
"Over the past two years, not only has LATAM launched an unprecedented 30 international services – including new destinations in Europe, North America and Oceania – we are also strengthening existing routes with more frequencies and connection options," says LATAM chief executive Enrique Cueto.
The airline began service to Las Vegas on 3 June from Sao Paulo, a day after it launched flights to Tucuman in Argentina. In 2017, it began service on 13 new international routes. It will begin another 17 in 2018, including routes that have already been inaugurated to San Jose (Costa Rica) and Rome. Service to Boston and Tel Aviv will begin later this year, among others.
