Southwest Airlines is seeking to delay the start of flights between Fort Lauderdale and Santa Clara in Cuba until 15 December, according to a regulatory filing.
The airline had initially planned on beginning service on the route on 7 December, but needs additional time to ensure the Santa Clara airport and support personnel in Cuba are prepared for the service, it says.
The delay will also give Southwest more time to conclude "extended slot negotiations with local authorities", the carrier says in the regulatory filing.
Southwest began service to Cuba on 13 November with the launch of daily Fort Lauderdale-Varadero flights. The carrier expects on 12 December to begin twice-daily Fort Lauderdale-Havana flights and once-daily Tampa-Havana flights, Southwest says.
