Spirit Airlines will add service to 11 destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean from Orlando International beginning October.
None of the overseas destinations are new to the network of Spirit, which already serves them mostly from Fort Lauderdale. With the additional routes at Orlando, the airline will fly to eight countries and two US territories from the airport in Florida.
Spirit says the announcement marks one of the largest network expansions in its history.
It will compete against other carriers on seven of the 11 international routes planned from Orlando, with Avianca and JetBlue Airways providing most of the competition, FlightGlobal schedules data show. Avianca had announced in May that it will begin service from Orlando to both San Salvador and Guatemala City in August.
"Orlando is now one of our largest markets, and we have no plans on stopping our growth. The region is not only a wonderful, family-friendly destination, but it is well-positioned to now serve as a gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America," says Spirit chief executive Bob Fornaro.
Spirit also recently announced plans to begin service from Orlando to three domestic destinations: Myrtle Beach, Asheville and Greensboro. These flights will begin from September.
