A planned new airline in Bangladesh that has been raising funds domestically and abroad is seeking to launch operations by the end of the year using ATR or Bombardier turboprops, writes Nicholas Ionides.

Managing director Capt T A Choudhury says United Airways (Bangladesh) wants to lease three ATR 42/72 or Bombardier Dash 8-300 turboprops. He says used aircraft are being sought for lease with an option to purchase.

United Airways plans to launch with domestic services and later expand into the international market, says Choudhury, who adds that business plans call for jet aircraft to be inducted in the second year of operation. The carrier will be competing against the country's two existing operators, state-owned Biman Bangladesh and privately owned GMG Airlines. Choudhury says United Airways has been raising funds from Bangladeshi expatriates in the UK and elsewhere.
