BFGOODRICH has introduced a version of its Stormscope weather-mapping system designed to interface with other manufacturers' multi-function displays. The WX-500 lightning sensor consists of an antenna and remote processor.

The advantage of the unit is that it can be interfaced with the latest generation of large-screen, liquid-crystal multi-function displays, says BFGoodrich Avionics Systems. This avoids the need for a separate lightning-sensor display, the company says, making installation easier and cheaper.

The $6,000 sensor can provide 120í forward-looking or 360í views of thunderstorm activity, at ranges from 45km (24nm) to 370km. Pilots can see lightning strikes and decide on the best course to navigate around thunderstorm cells.o
