A pioneer conference on security in the Asia Pacific region is to be launched in conjunction with the next Asian Aerospace in Singapore.

The Asia-Pacific Security Conference (APSEC) will be presented jointly by the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies and Asian Aerospace, organiser of Asia's largest airshow.

With the theme, "The Strategic Environment in the 21st Century", the inaugural conference will be held from 24-25 February 2002 at the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Director Barry Desker of the Singapore-based Institute says the conference will be aimed at high-level personnel from the political, military, corporate and academic sectors worldwide, many of whom will be planning to attend Asian Aerospace.

Included in the list of speakers will be Professor Wang Jisi, director of the Institute of American Studies at Beijing University's Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, regarded as the country's top America watcher.

Other speakers will include Francois Heisbourg, chairman of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy in Paris.

Barry Desker adds: "The Asia Pacific Security Conference will be a flagship event for our institute, providing a much-needed platform for eminent scholars, analysts, political and military leaders to address current global security issues."
