Air New Zealand-owned Safe Air has been awarded New Zealand's largest-ever defence aerospace maintenance contract, involving NZ$110 million ($75.3 million) worth of heavy maintenance work on the Royal New Zealand Air Force's Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules, P-3 Orion and Bell UH-1 aircraft and Rolls-Royce T56 turbine engines.

While the company has won previous RNZAF heavy maintenance contracts, the new six-year deal, which also has a potential five-year extension period, includes spares supply, components management and clear performance targets, says general manager Jeremy Remecha. The work will be conducted at Safe Air's heavy maintenance facilities at RNZAF Woodbourne in Blenheim.

Safe Air is already responsible for the life-extension of the RNZAF's C-130s and the upgrade of its P-3s on behalf of lead contractor L-3 Communications.
