Argentina has stopped negotiations about a possible purchase of upgraded Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Kfir fighters, despite indications earlier this year that a deal for 12-14 aircraft could be finalised.
IAI's proposal was linked to the supply of a modernised version of the vintage airframe with a GE Aviation J79 engine, Elta Systems' EL/M-2032 active electronically scanned array radar and an open architecture avionics suite that would allow a customer to install its own systems.
The Israeli company – which has previously supplied Kfirs to Colombia, Ecuador and Sri Lanka, says "other options are being evaluated with Argentina". Its Block 60 version is the latest upgrade to the Israeli-made type, which entered operational service more than 40 years ago.
