Boeing has won a $140 million contract to supply four MH-47G Block II Chinook helicopters to the US Army's Special Operations Aviation Command
This starts the Block II production run, which is expected to continue into the late 2020s, says Boeing.
“The Army uses the MH-47G for some of its most difficult and challenging missions,” says Pat Donnelly, director H-47 domestic and foreign military sales programmes.
“By incorporating key Block II features we significantly extend the service life, enhance performance, and maintain Chinook’s position as the world’s preeminent special operations helicopter.”
Boeing says that the army operates 69 MH-47Gs.
“The Block II program incorporates several upgrades to increase lift capability,” adds Boeing.
“Those upgrades include Advanced Chinook Rotor Blades, an upgraded fuselage, a new fuel system and a new drivetrain. Overall, the aircraft will increase its payload capacity by more than 4,000lbs while also performing in higher and hotter conditions.”
