GENERAL ELECTRIC has formally launched development of the CF34-8C turbofan amid growing speculation that Bombardier is to follow suit with the proposed CRJ-X 70-seat stretch of the Canadair Regional Jet.
At the same time, GE has signed an -8C collaboration agreement with Japan Aero Engines, a group formed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries.
The 13,000-15,000lb (57-67kN)-thrust -8C was selected to power the CRJ-X in 1995 and preliminary design of the engine, a 40% growth version of the CF34 which powers the current 50-seat Regional Jet, was completed in May 1995.
