The Italian defence ministry has accepted the first Alenia Aeronautica C-27J Spartan tactical transport aircraft following the completion of tests.
The twin-engine turboprop tactical transport aircraft (pictured below), which was delivered earlier this week, is the first from an order of 12 C-27Js on order by Rome. The C-27J has been developed by Lockheed Martin Alenia Tactical Transport Systems (LMATTS), a joint venture company based in Marietta, Georgia, which was set up by Lockheed Martin and Alenia.
The first flight of the development aircraft took place in September 1999 and received its Italian Military type certification in December 2001. The aircraft, which are accompanied by a five year support contract, will replace the fleet of Alenia G.222s operated by the Italian air force 46th Wing based at Pisa air base.
A second aircraft will be presented to the air force for test by the end of the year and all 12 will be delivered by 2008.
The Italian air force's aircraft are fitted with a flight-refuelling device, self-protection system and double head-up displays.
LMATTS has secured export orders for the C-27J from Greece, Bulgaria and Lithuania. The first Greek aircraft from an order of 12 has been in service since September 2005.
