Romania’s interior ministry has ordered three Airbus Helicopters H135s for aero-medical and search and rescue missions.
Acquired as part of a framework agreement signed at the end of July, the pact covers the purchase of up to 10 examples of the German-built light-twin.
“Airbus has been an active player in Romania for almost 50 years and we are proud that the interior ministry has selected the H135 for such critical missions,” says Georges Durdilly, head of Airbus Helicopters in Romania.
Although the airframer has had a long association with Romania’s aerospace industry, plans announced in 2015 to build the H215 in the country have so far come to nothing.
A facility to house a final assembly line was built in Brasov, but Bucharest has so far not ordered any of the heavy-twins, preventing production from beginning.
Airbus Helicopters requires a minimum order quantity of 16 helicopters to justify opening the new assembly line.
In the meantime, the facility in Brasov has been occupied by sister company Premium Aerotec.
