State-of-the-art virtual reality concepts form the centrepiece of the North West Aerospace Alliance (NWAA) stand in Hall 1, E29.UK educational institutions and manufacturers have got together to demonstrate applications for virtual reality solutions present and future.

These include the 'virtual workbench' developed by the University of Salford Virtual Environments Centre. This shows how 3D images of complex components and assemblies can be manipulated and re-modelled by real-time users.

Another company, Virtual Presence, is displaying its solution for avionics maintenance training on the RAF Panavia Tornado F3, which has been developed under contract to Alenia Marconi Systems.

These two organisations are among 50 NWAA members exhibiting under the Alliance banner, displaying capabilities encompassing all aspects of high precision engineering for the aerospace sector, advanced manufacturing sites and services.

NWAA projects manager Rachel Smith says:

"This year's show will see the biggest ever representation of North West of England aerospace industry suppliers at an international event. The demand for space at Farnborough has been astounding.

"With reorganisation and mergers affecting all the top manufacturers, suppliers know they need to compete even harder to win business and Farnborough is the ideal venue to make new contacts."
