Lamar Muse, a co-founder of Southwest Airlines and founder of a rival carrier he launched and named after himself only to see Southwest take it over, died at age 86.

After working with Southwest chairman Herb Kelleher to found Southwest in 1971, Muse left seven years later in a boardroom dispute. In 1981, Muse and his son Michael started Muse Air, called by many in Texas "Revenge Air", but it failed and by 1985 Southwest had bought its assets.

Muse had worked at several smaller carriers and at American Airlines before joining Kelleher and fellow Southwest co-founder Rollin King. Kelleher mourned his passing, noting that Muse developed the "quick-turn" operating strategy on which Southwest still depends.
