Alitalia Technical Operations division has secured contracts to overhaul two Continental Airlines DC-10s at its Rome maintenance centre and is optimistic that it will win a longer term commitment from the US carrier.

One contract is for a C-check, the other a D-check. Winning a more substantial contract would satisfy the division's desire to expand its maintenance workload on DC-10s and MD-11s.

Says Leonardo Mento, marketing and sales product manager: "Having been a central partner in the Atlas Group, we have 20 years of experience in overhauling DC-10s. In the last 20 years, we have performed more than 200 overhauls. We are totally self-sufficient in this area."

Also at the show (Stand B208) is Atitech, a strategic project within Alitalia which maintains its own fleet of medium range MD-80s.

Working with Alitalia Technical Operations, Atitech is world leader in maintenance for a McDonnell Douglas narrowbody aircraft. Since 1989 it has performed 300 C-checks and 60 D-checks.

It has recently won a contract with China Northern to perform nine D-checks at Capodichino Airport, Naples.

Gaetano Esposito, commercial manager of Atitech, says the company is looking to diversify: "We're looking to develop our current light maintenance work on the Airbus family and Boeing 737/717s.

"Our work for Alitalia now constitutes only 70% of our business which is a healthy position to be in."
