Pratt & Whitney is exploring opportunities for teaming with Russian companies to develop its PW1400G geared turbofan engine that has been selected to power United Aircraft's MS-21 twinjet.

Speaking at an industry show in Moscow, P&W international business and joint projects vice-president Robert Robinson said a team of the US engine maker's specialists in February visited the Perm-based powerplant design bureau Aviadvigatel and manufacturer NPO Saturn in Rybinsk.

"They assessed their capabilities from both engine development and production standpoints," he says. "We're holding a discussion with United Engine Corporation about joining efforts and hope to finalise talks this year.

"We're seeking a starting point for co-operation. Apart from design and manufacture, there are also good opportunities in the fields of engine testing and aftermarket support."

Robinson admits that forming a partnership with Russian firms may be not easy. "The PW1400G will be subject to certification by the US Federal Aviation Administration. To fulfil its requirements, we'll need to harmonise standards for design and engineering work with collaborators," he says.
