Massachusetts-based L-3 Security & Detection Systems revealed that its "eXaminer XLB" baggage scanner has been granted the EU's Standard 3 aviation safety approval.
The explosives detection system was examined by the engineering department of France's aviation regulator, Service Technique de l'Aviation Civile, according to Europe's new common evaluation programme.
The x-ray scanner produces three-dimensional, cross-sectional images of bags and their contents using computer tomography technology from the medical arena. The system allows airport security staff to rotate the images 360°.
L-3 separately said that the US Transportation Security Administration has placed its equipment on its list of qualified technologies to scan both single-piece and pallet-based aircraft cargo.
