A Raytheon space-based hyperspectral sensor, the Advanced Responsive, Tactically Effective Military Imaging Sensor (Artemis) has reached its second year in operation, despite an expected one-year lifespan.

Launched on 19 May, 2009, aboard the TacSat-3, the experimental sensor was later transitioned to operational status by the US Air Force.

It is expected to last another six to eight months, said Raytheon.

Artemis serves primarily as a cueing device - once the sensor detects something, such as a buried improvised explosive device, an airborne hyperspectral platform is dispatched for a more detailed look.
