ST Aerospace aims to add an additional aircraft type to its passenger-to-freighter conversion portfolio to increase its capabilities in the sector.

The Singapore-headquartered maintenance, repair and overhaul firm is still evaluating this and should make an announcement by February 2012, its president, Chang Cheow Teck, said at the Paris air show.

ST Aerospace currently converts Boeing 757-200s into freighters at its facilities in Singapore and Mobile, Alabama.

"The growth in the cargo market means that there are opportunities for more conversions down the line," he added.

ST Aerospace also wants to design and manufacture engine and component subsystems indigenously for its PTF programme to diversify its capabilities. This will be via a Singapore-based company that it has acquired, and it will be on a risk-revenue sharing model with an original equipment manufacturer.

"Not many third-party MRO firms also have in-house engineering and design capabilities. We have experience in managing the manufacturing supply chain through our PTF programme, and we can manage this," said Chang.

The company also wants to expand its airframe and engine MRO business into the Middle East and Europe, where it currently does not have a presence, through acquisitions and investments.
