Thales subsidiary TDA has commenced the active marketing of a high-tech update to the venerable pod-launched rocket.

TDA executive Matthieu Krouri says the system sharply reduces rocket maintenance, eliminates a foreign object debris (FOD) hazard, and improves reloading times.

Since the 1960s, the standard rocket has required two wire connections while in the launch tube: one to fuse the weapon and the other to fire the rocket motor. These wires require regular cleaning and maintenance. When the rocket launches the wires are blasted off, creating fast-travelling FOD that can damage aircraft surfaces.

To meet a French army requirement, TDA replaced the wires with an induction coil system, which allows the wireless fusing and launching of rockets. The system has been used since 2009 aboard Airbus Helicopter Tigers operated by the French army.

“The system is fully digital from the operator to the ammunition,” says Krouri. “This system is lighter, more accurate, and there is no maintenance.”
