Piaggio is expected to announce today that it has beaten off competition from Raytheon and Cessna and won a contract to supply a P180 Avanti to a Polish operator for an air ambulance role.

The deal would mark a new era for the Italian airframe manufacturer. It last made a sale to an eastern European customer more than 10 years ago and it would be its first public sector sale outside Italy.

Invitations to tender were issued in April by Lotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe, an air rescue company operating on behalf of the Polish government.

The P180 Avanti is already used by the Italian air force in an air ambulance configuration.
