German budget carrier Air Berlin plans to order 60 Boeing 737-800s to replace expiring lease contracts and secure its future growth.
The carrier says deliveries are scheduled to begin at the end of 2007 and will run until 2014. No firm contract has yet been signed with Boeing.
“By awarding this large contract, we are securing a favourable delivery price for the long-term,” says Air Berlin chief executive Joachim Hunold.
“As was the case in the past, we aim to renew our fleet every six to eight years in order to be able to deploy the least noise-polluting and the most fuel-efficient and cost-efficient aircraft.”
Air Berlin says the planned order, together with the 25 737s ordered by its recently-acquired subsidiary DBA [formerly Deutsche BA], means the carrier will take delivery of 85 new aircraft between 2007 and 2014.
