Emergency services at Istanbul Ataturk Airport are attending an incident in which an Ariana Afghan Airlines Airbus A300B4 apparently skidded off the runway while landing.
Istanbul’s airport authority has not reported any injuries from the incident. The aircraft has come to a halt resting on its right wing.
The General Electric CF6-powered aircraft has been identified as a 25-year old example registered YA-BAD, owned by the Afghan flag-carrier.
Weather conditions at Istanbul have relatively poor with rain and gusting winds. The A300 slid off Ataturk’s runway 06/24 which has a length of 2,300m (7,545ft).
Ariana operates flight FG719 from Kabul via Ankara. Istanbul Airport’s on-line schedule shows that this flight arrived at around 13:50.
European Union air transport regulators have included Ariana on the ‘blacklist’ banning the carrier from operating to EU member states.
