Singapore Airlines has unveiled new cabin products for its Airbus A380 fleet, the first major revamp since it became the launch customer of the type in 2007.
At a media launch in Singapore, the carrier showcased a new first-class suite product, exclusive to its A380s. Each suite features a standalone full-flat bed measuring 27in by 76 in, which can be stowed when not in use. There is also a 21in wide leather chair that can swivel up to 270 degrees, and recline up to 45 degrees.
In its new configuration, there will only be six suites on an SIA A380. The beds in the first two suites of each aisle can be converted to a double bed. Asked about the decision to not offer a shower suite, SIA chief executive Goh Choon Phong says this follows customers' feedback that in-flight showers are "not a priority".
Each suite, manufactured by Zodiac Seats UK, also has a 32-inch full HD monitor, a full-sized personal wardrobe, and a customized handbag stowage compartment.
In business class, the 78 seats will be in a 1-2-1 configuration, each accompanied by an 18in high-definition touch-screen. The seats are narrower at 25in, down from the current 28in, but recline directly into a full-flat bed. The
A unique feature of the seat is its carbon fibre composite shell structure, which has a thinner base structure that creates enough space for underseat stowage of a full-sized cabin bag.
In premium economy, each seat is 19.5in wide, with an eight-inch recline and a seat pitch of 38in. Manufactured by ZIM Flugsitz GmbH, the seats are paired with a 13.3in full high-definition monitor.
Economy class will have an 18.5in wide seat with a pitch of 32in, built by Recaro. The seat also features a six-way adjustable headrest with foldable wings, and an 11.1in touch-screen monitor.
SIA's new A380s will be equipped with Inmarsat GX Aviation's broadband connectivity system and Panasonic Avionics' eX3 in-flight entertainment system.
SIA introduced a new interactive feature called myKrisWorld, which makes content recommendations based on customer preferences and viewing history, as well as a mobile app for passengers to discover content before their flight.
"The introduction of our all-new cabin products is intended to ensure we retain our product leadership position," says SIA senior vice-president product & services Marvin Tan.
Chief executive Goh adds: "We are confident that the results will genuinely 'wow' our customers, and ensure that we continue to provide them an unparalleled travel experience."
The first new A380 aircraft equipped with the new cabin products is scheduled to enter into commercial service on the Singapore-Sydney route on 18 December. Four more new A380s will be delivered to SIA progressively in 2018, while the airline will also retrofit its 14 existing A380s.
